What Is Dog Agility Training?

Agility training teaches a dog to handle obstacles safely and teaches a person how to guide. Together you learn jumps, tunnels, weave poles, and ramps, then how to connect them into a course.

It is a sport, but it does not have to be competitive. Many teams train every week and never enter a trial.

What You Will Practice

  1. Connection first. Your dog learns that paying attention to you is rewarding.
  2. Meeting the equipment. Low jumps and a short tunnel, one at a time.
  3. Putting pieces together. A few obstacles in a row while you guide the path.
  4. Ramps and the teeter. Climbing obstacles are added slowly, with a safe stop at the bottom.
  5. Weaving. Poles start as a wide channel and close up as your dog understands.
