In agility, jump height depends on the dog’s height at the withers, the top of the shoulder blades. That way small and large dogs each jump a height that suits them.

Jump Height Questions

How do I measure my dog for agility?

Stand your dog on a flat floor with all four feet square and the head in a natural position. Measure straight up from the floor to the top of the shoulder blades, called the withers. A level or a flat ruler across the shoulders against a wall makes it easier.

Is the calculator result official?

It is a guide. For AKC competition, dogs are measured by an official at a trial, and that measurement decides the jump height. A dog near the edge of a height group may be placed differently.

What is the Preferred division?

Preferred is an AKC option where a dog jumps one height lower than Regular and gets a little more time on course. Many handlers choose it for older dogs, heavier breeds, or dogs who are more comfortable at a lower height.

Will my dog jump this height in class?

Not at first. In a beginner class, bars start on the ground or very low so the dog can learn what a jump is. Height is raised gradually, and puppies stay low while they are still growing.

Do other agility organizations use the same heights?

No. USDAA, CPE, NADAC, UKI, and others each have their own height groups. This calculator shows AKC heights only.
